LetterBomb is a safe method of enabling homebrew on a Wii without the need for hardware modification. It utilizes the Wii Message Board to execute a homebrew application from an external SD card. Examples of such files include .elf or .dol files, which can be found on the Homebrew applications page.

The exploit was developed by Team Twiizers and it allows users to run homebrew applications without the need of a game, similar to the now-defunct Bannerbomb. It was inspired by Wilbrand, however, the actual release of LetterBomb came first. It is compatible with any region of System Menu 4.3.

Installation

For detailed instructions on using this method to set up Homebrew from start to finish, see Letterbomb on WiiBrew.

Requirements:

  • SD or SDHC card formatted as FAT16 or FAT32.
  • System Menu 4.3 (it won't work on any lower version).
  • Wii's WiFi MAC Address (can be found in the Wii's system settings) as it is needed for the Wii to accept messages addressed to its specific MAC address.
  • A method to transfer files from PC to the SD card (such as a card reader or printer).
  • Some homebrew software to load (optional but recommended) The exploit will try to load "boot.elf" (or "boot.dol" if not found) from the SD card's root directory.

Instructions:

  • On Computer: Rename the "private" folder on the SD card to "privateold" if it exists.
  • On Computer: Copy the "private" directory from the LetterBomb download to the root of the SD card.
  • On Computer: Place your homebrew software (preferably Hackmii Installer) in the root of the SD card as "boot.elf". The Hackmii Installer can be directly downloaded from the link provided. You will be prompted to select U (American), E (Europe), J (Japanese) or K (Korean).
  • Wii: Insert the SD card into the Wii and turn it on.
  • Wii: Go to the Wii Message Board and navigate to "Today", "Yesterday" or "Two days ago".
  • Wii: Click on the appropriate envelope and sit back as the exploit runs and prepares for the glory of hacking.
