Game Center CX is an acclaimed Japanese series in which comedian Shinya Arino plays retro games for hours on end, until they are beaten or exhaustion ends up beating him. This successful show has over 180 recorded episodes and many fans worldwide, having reached English speakers largely due to the efforts of the SA GCCX translation team, subsequently being broadcast via streaming by the Kotaku website and seeing an official DVD release.

The series became so popular that it spawned three portable games. The first Nintendo DS title, GameCenter CX: Arino no Chousenjou, was broght to the occident by Xseed Games under the title of Retro Game Challenge. While met with a lukewarm reaction from the general public, it generated commotion amid lovers of classic games, with its genuinely retro feeling and lovingly crafted gameplay. It features a collection of standalone games within its virtual world that recreate experiences from hits of old, throwing the player right back to Arino's childhood.

The sequel GameCenter CX: Arino no Chousenjou 2 is a definitive title which improves upon all the features from its predecessor, being more expansive, packing more content and playing better. Unfortunately, it was never made widely accessible outside of Japan due to the limited sales of the first entry. In 2013, Aaron Tokunaga-Chmielowiec took upon himself to translate the title into English, and with the gracious help and service of other volunteers, the impromptu team managed to give all the attention to detail that this series deserves, finally rendering it playable to fans worldwide.

Known Issues

  • The No$GBA emulator has known issues with this game. The fog in Super Demon Returns is messed up, and the portraits in the Adventure game start to glitch out after a while. There is also a strange whitening effect overall on by default.
  • Desmume works flawlessly but enabling OpenGL may cause issues with some of the 3D textures like Arino's crown and your main character portrait. If you have sound issues in Desmume, particularly with Arino and the announcer, set your Sound Settings to "Synchronous Mode"
  • The voice data of Arino and the Announcer are left in Japanese in the game. There is no way to add subtitles and even if we could replace the sound data with other voices, there are 1290 voice samples from Arino alone in the game and another 50 or so from the announcer. A chart is in progress explaining what each one is, though may or common grunts or off-handed comments related to the game you are playing.
  • The RPG (Guadia Quest Saga) and (less so the) Adventure games have a mind boggling possible number of combinations of actions, situations, items, skills and dialogues. There may exist a random combination of these that results in something unexpected. All games have been tested from beginning to end, however.
  • The Adventure games and RPG use a variable width font in order to fit more of the dialogue on screen (which means characters like "i" and "l" don't take up as much space on screen as "o" or "s"; there is no padding of the slimmer characters). The text has been adjusted to try and align it better though precision alignment is a slow and tedious process.
  • There are two points in the Adventure games where a word entry screen is displayed. Try to use all lowercase or all uppercase characters. For names, camel caps works. Not all possibilities of capitalization work, so keep that in mind when solving these puzzles.
