Bannerbomb is an exploit that allows users to launch homebrew from System Menu versions 3.0-4.2. It was created by Comex on April 5th, 2009, as a replacement for the Twilight Hack which no longer worked on later System Menu versions. However, it should be noted that the original Bannerbomb exploit does not work on System Menu 4.2. A new version, Bannerbomb v2, has been released by Comex that works on System Menu 4.2.
It is important to note that Bannerbomb v2 does not work on System Menu 4.3 or later, and attempting to use it will result in an error. Users with later System Menu versions should use other exploits like LetterBomb Wii, Smash Stack Wii, Indiana Pwns Wii, Bathaxx Wii, Yu-Gi-Vah Wii (NTSC-U/J only), Yu-Gi-OWNED! Wii (PAL version of Yu-Gi-Vah), Eri Hakawai Wii, FlashHax Wii, Bluebomb Wii, Return Of The Jodi Wii and Str2hax Wii instead. The exploit works by using a malformed banner that crashes the Wii, allowing code to be run to load the boot.dol file from the root of the SD card. It can be used to install the Homebrew Channel and BootMii via the HackMii Installer Wii.
Usage
What you need
- SD (or SDHC, only on System Menu 4.0 or higher) card formatted as FAT16 or FAT32.
- SD card reader for PC or a PC with one built-in
- Bannerbomb channel data on your SD Card
- Some homebrew to load (Recommended, the HackMii Installer Wii)
- A system menu between 3.0 and 4.2. (System Menu 4.3 prevents Bannerbomb from executing. This can be bypassed with Priiloader Wii, but another exploit is needed to do that in the first place.)
Guide
- If your SD card has a private directory with saved channels, rename it temporarily, e.g. to "privateold". Having other saved channels on the same card will screw it up. (You can skip this step if you don't have any channels on the SD card. Saves are fine.)
- Copy the Bannerbomb "private" folder to the root of your SD card.
- Take your Wii executable, name it "boot.dol" or "boot.elf" if it isn't already, and save it in the root directory of your SD card.
- Put your SD card in your Wii and turn it on.
-
- For Bannerbomb v1: Go into Wii Options --> Data Management --> Channels --> SD Card.
- For Bannerbomb v2: Go to the SD Card Menu on the main System Menu screen
- A message should appear asking to "load boot.dol/.elf". If it freezes or does not appear, download the next .zip file from the Bannerbomb website and start over.
- The homebrew on your SD card will load. Enjoy!
- (Optional) Fill out Comex's survey on the Bannerbomb website.

Troubleshooting
Please note that Bannerbomb does not work for everyone at this time.
If your Wii freezes while trying to use Bannerbomb, follow these diagnostics:
- Repeat the procedure with the same version once or twice. It can be fickle.
- Make sure you're not trying to use the SD Menu on System Menu 4.0 (the little blue SD card button in the lower left).
- Check that you pressed the Channels button in Data Management.
- Make sure that Bannerbomb is the only channel on the SD card.
- Try a different version of Bannerbomb. Most people should be able to use the recommended version of BannerBomb given, but some might need another version.
- Eject the SD card, go into the channels menu, then on SD where it says no SD card is inserted, then insert the card (works for Toshiba 256MB cards and Menu 4.0E at least)
Bugs
- If it gives you the dialog but freezes instead of loading the elf/dol, email Comex ( comexk @ gmail dot com ). Tell him where it froze and whether or not the slot light is on. You might also try removing the disc.
- If you press "no" when it asks you whether you want to load a elf/dol then it might freeze.
- It is possible to press the back button "under" the dialog. Make sure you don't do that.
