Sonic Vitality is a Sonic fangame, it was developed at an irregular pace since August 2019 and totalling an estimated 3,000+ hours of actual work.

Sonic Vitality is available as a playable demo for Windows and HENkaku-enabled Vita systems. You can also download the project files for both platforms to freely modify them. Any assets that are finished and can be legally/ethically distributed have been released for public use, and several outline documents written for personal use have also been released.

Installation

Install the VPK on your homebrew enabled PS Vita or PS TV.

(Optional) Using PSVshell for improved performance:

  • After the game finishes loading (indicated by the disclaimer screen appearing) press Select and Up (D-Pad) to open PSVshell.
  • Press Cross while highlighting "CPU" and use the D-pad to adjust the clock to 500 MHz.
  • No performance is gained by overclocking the GPU, so there’s no need to adjust it.
  • Press Select and Down (D-Pad) to close the PSVshell menu, or press Select and Up (D-Pad) again to display framerate during gameplay.

User guide

Sonic Moves

Boost - As you collect Rings and defeat Badniks, your Boost gauge will fill up, indicated by a blue glow around your Ring counter. Holding X/Square with a partially or completely full Boost gauge will allow you to Boost. While Boosting, Sonic can move at incredible speeds, and is also immune to enemy contact. As you boost, your Boost gauge will drain. If you run out, you’ll be forced to stop boosting. Please note that it costs more to start a Boost than maintain it, so make sure to only use it when there’s room to open it up!

Air Boost - If you have energy in the Boost gauge, you can hold the X/Square button to Boost while mid-air. However, this isn’t as powerful as a normal Boost, and can only be used once while in the air, recharging once you hit the ground.

Super Peel Out - If Sonic is out of Boost energy, he can still hit Boost-like speeds by charging a Super Peel Out. Hold X/Square, and Sonic will begin revving up. While revving up, you can change the direction of his Peel Out by holding forward on the left analog stick, then tilting it left or right. Holding X/Square for longer will make the Peel Out more powerful. Finally, releasing X/Square will finish the Peel Out, causing Sonic to be propelled at incredible speeds for a short moment. Please note that Sonic can still be hurt during and after a Peel Out.

Quick Step - Sonic can quickly dodge left or right while running by Quick Stepping. Simply tap LB or RB (quickly tap L or R on Vita) to step in the corresponding direction. Drift: Sonic can control how sharply he takes a corner by Drifting. By holding LT or RT (press and hold L or R on Vita), Sonic will begin Drifting in that direction. To control the Drift, hold the left analog stick forward, then carefully tilt it left or right to control how sharply Sonic Drifts.

Camera Control - You can use the right analog stick to rotate the camera, even while moving.

Shadow Moves

Spin Dash - By holding X/Square, Shadow will curl up and begin revving up. While revving up, you can change the direction by holding forward on the left analog stick, then tilting it left or right. When Shadow begins glowing orange, the Spin Dash is charged. Finally, releasing X/Square will finish the Spin Dash, causing Shadow to be propelled at incredible speeds. You can press B/Circle to curl out of Spin Dash, or jump out of it. While in Ball form, Shadow can’t be harmed by enemy contact.

Melee - While in the air, you can press X/Square to have Shadow quickly attack a group of enemies. However, some enemies are immune to this. As a rule, an enemy with spikes or weapons at the front is immune to Melee.

Chaos Control - As Shadow collects Rings and destroys Badniks, his Chaos Control gauge will charge, indicated by a Chaos Emerald icon on the HUD slowly regaining color. When the gauge is full, press RB/R while either skating or standing still to initiate Chaos Control. After a few moments, time will stop for everything and everyone except Shadow, including the stage timer. During Chaos Control, the Chaos Control gauge will slowly drain, concluding Chaos Control when it empties.

Compatibility

Recommended for PS Vita/PS TV 3.60 with HENkaku/Ensō. Other firmware versions may work, but 3.60 is somewhat standardized in the Vita homebrew scene, so you're best off using that. If you haven't installed CFW on your Vita before, please refer to the official guide over at vita.hacks.guide. Do not refer to any other guides, especially YouTube guides. These are often outdated, and may lead to bricking your Vita if followed.
