New Super Mario Advance + Take 2 is a remake of the classic NES game Super Mario Bros. 2, incorporating more traditional Mario gameplay but retaining the same classic elements that comes along with NSMB.

It also includes enhanced levels from New Super Mario Bros. 2: Doki Doki Panic!! Edition - an old hack which took inspiration from Super Mario Bros. 2. New levels have been added, including the entirety of Super Mario Bros. 2, allowing players to explore the dream world of Subcon with the traditional Mario gameplay that is now a staple of the series.

This hack is a sequel to Clone Tag Team, you can play as either Mario, Luigi or Toad - three of the four original cast members of Super Mario Bros. 2.

Features

  • A remake of the classic NES title.
  • All 20 levels from Super Mario Bros. 2 remade in NSMB.
  • The land of Subcon is re-imagined in true Mario style.
  • With new and old graphics combined to blend in with the NDSMB style.
  • A number of completely new courses and seasonal changes to mix up classic levels.
  • Rebuilt, remake and fully enchanced of New Super Mario Bros. 2: Doki Doki Panic!! Edition.

Installation

There are three patches in this package, each containing a different playable character - Mario, Luigi and Toad.

These run from the original New Super Mario Bros. DS ROM (USA version).

Compatibility

You can play it using an emulator (such as No$GBA and DeSmuME) or using a Nintendo DS/3DS flashcart like R4DS or Supercard DSTWO.

Known issues

Some particular areas of the hack are missing background music and certain sound effects. Due to the level design of Super Mario Bros. 2 often requiring many different visual environments per level, exploits had to be made of the New Super Mario Bros. game engine to keep the level design faithful. The downside to this exploit is that there may be some rooms and areas that lack sound effects. I have tried to keep this to a minimum, so there are very few areas where this happens and the rooms where it does take effect are brief enough to be ignored.

If a Fuzzy is located in a level, Buzzy Beetles don't have a walking animation. Fuzzies replace Spike Tops in this hack, and Spike Tops and Buzzy Beetles share a walking animation, so Buzzy Beetles won't load their own individual animation if the game believes the Spike Top animation is already loaded. Because Fuzzies slide along walls there is no walking animation. In levels where there are no Fuzzies Buzzy Beetles have walking animations as intended.
