Dawn Will Come is a survival adventure game made by eishiya, H0lyhandgrenade, and C_DOS_KEZ for the Game Boy Competition 2021 (Game).

Content warning: Death, low-res gore, body horror, animal harm, stalking; screen flashing in combat scenes.

Installation

You will need an emulator such as BGB or VBA to play the ROM file, or you can put it on a flashcart to play on a real Game Boy.

User guide

It's dark. How long has it been dark?

Monsters prowl everywhere, supplies are scarce. Decide your tasks, carry them out, find more survivors to help, fight back the creatures that emerge from the Night. You must survive, because surely Dawn Will Come.

How to play

Assign tasks (Rest, Guard, or Search) for each person daily. Use the "Do Tasks" option by the campfire to execute them.

  • Rest recovers health, but unguarded sleepers risk night attacks.
  • Guarding protects sleepers and supplies, but your guards may have to fight.
  • Searching can get you supplies and potential new friends, but searchers might face monsters.

The "Move" option by the campfire lets you change locations and explore new places. If you Move, more food will be consumed, and the guards might have to fight off monsters.

Auto-save happens every night. Don't turn off your Game Boy or emulator during a black screen.

Changelog

2021/09/20

  • Difficulty modes:
    • Easy Mode for a (slightly) more relaxed experience. The characters all start out stronger.
    • Normal Mode, this is the mode that's always been there.
    • Hard Mode, for a greater challenge. It starts off the same as Normal Mode, but ramps up in difficulty more. You must reach dawn with everyone alive in Easy or Normal mode to unlock this one.
  • Quality of Life features:
    • All splash damage attacks show a notification.
    • Dakota's and Ivor's specials show notifications of what exactly they did.
    • When Saman heals a friend, there is a notification.
  • Searching is a little more painful now as the game goes on.
  • Oddly quiet nights, searching, and splash damage work like they're supposed to.
