Tyrian, a vertically scrolling shooter, was initially released for MS-DOS in 1995, developed by Eclipse Software and published by Epic MegaGames. In 1999, it received a re-release as "Tyrian 2000," featuring an additional fifth episode and bug fixes.

The Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance versions of "Tyrian 2000" were developed by World Tree Games. However, due to the closure of the publisher Symmetry Entertainment, the European publisher, Stealth Productions, Inc., acquired the rights, but unfortunately, the game was cancelled.

Both Game Boy versions eventually became freeware, released in compiled format in 2007 by World Tree Games.

In the Game Boy Color version, the Full Game offers a shorter story (Episodes 1-4) compared to the original DOS game. However, the core of planet Ixmucane is always destroyed at the end, and the levels were redesigned. The rear weapon from the DOS game is unavailable, and players can carry two Sidekick weapons but only use one at a time. Unlocking new game modes and items requires purchasing Extras using credits obtained from completing stages.

The Game Boy Advance version incorporates graphics from the DOS game while basing the level layout and gameplay on the Game Boy Color version. Players can fire two Sidekick weapons simultaneously, but the Super Arcade and audio elements are not included. Additionally, a new Challenge mode allows players to unlock additional levels by completing existing Challenge levels.
