Rez Advance is a rhythm game written for IEEE Gameboy Advance Programming Contest in 2005. It is based off the PS2 game Rez, which is shooter in the loosest sense of the genre.
The game's core concept revolves around its music, with visuals and mechanics synchronized to it. It uses a 4-channel audio mixer, with three channels for background music and the fourth for sound effects. The Gameboy Advance lacks a hardware mixer, so a software mixer was implemented. Originally, four channels were used, but it could handle 8 or even 16 channels. Background music samples are of the same length for proper alignment, and sound effects are timed to 16th or 8th note beats.
The visuals feature a repeating animation, creating a vortex effect, pulsating with the music's beat. Enemies approach from the vortex center and shoot missiles, but they can't harm the player directly. Instead of shooting enemies at any time, the player marks up to 4 targets with a targeter and can then synchronize their destruction with the music.
Scoring is based on destroying enemies and missiles. Enemies yield more points, encouraging players not to solely focus on missile defense. Multiple simultaneous targets increase the score multiplier for those kills.
