Characters
The Legend: DMG, the original Game Boy (1989) - Released in 1989, the original Game Boy, codenamed "Dot Matrix Game (DMG)," stands as the most iconic and successful handheld game console in history.
The Ancestor: Microvision (1979) - The first true handheld console, manufactured by MB. Despite its basic features like a 16x16 pixel screen, creating a portable device in 1979 was an engineering feat. Its inventor, Jay Smith, also created the Vectrex home console in 1982. Satoru Okada, co-creator of the Game Boy, cited Microvision as an inspiration for the Game Boy's creation.
The Clone: GB Boy Classic (201X) - Counterfeiters have attempted to clone the Game Boy over the years. The GB Boy Classic, a recent attempt, closely mimics the Game Boy Pocket and plays original Game Boy cartridges. However, it runs them slightly faster, leading to audio and graphic glitches.
The Ordinary People: Smartphone (2007) - Modern gamers opt for smartphones for portable play. Smartphones function as pocket computers, handling various tasks, including gaming.
The Rich One: iPhone XS Max (2018) - Wealthy players can experience gaming on the luxurious OLED screen of the iPhone XS Max.
The Mobile Phone: Nokia 5110 (1998) - Nokia introduced gaming to mobile phones in the late '90s, with its famous "Snake" game, starting with the Nokia 5110.
The Mobile Phone, Better: Nokia 3310 (2000) - Replacing the Nokia 5110, the 3310 offered a more compact form factor and no visible antenna, while still featuring "Snake."
The Hybrid: Nokia N-Gage (2003) - In 2003, Nokia attempted a hybrid mobile phone/handheld console, the N-Gage. However, it was unwieldy for both calls and games, leading to commercial failure.
The Pet: Tamagotchi (1996) - Tamagotchi, an electronic toy, requires players to care for a virtual pet by feeding and playing with it.
The Half-Brother: Wonderswan (1999) - Created by Game Boy co-inventor Gunpei Yokoi, the WonderSwan rivaled the Game Boy in Japan, but never reached its popularity.
The High-End: Nec PC Engine GT / TurboExpress (1990) - The PC Engine GT, a pricey handheld console, boasted a color screen and crisp sound delivery.
The Wannabe: Watara Supervision (1992) - The Supervision attempted to capture Game Boy's appeal with a 160*160 pixel screen.
The Imitator: Delplay Game Plus (1991) - The Game Master's cheaper imitation, Delplay Game Plus, featured a horrid 64x64 pixel screen and reduced cartridge size.
