Heebie-GBs is a LSDj-based cartridge album, consists of a compilation of eerie tunes released on Halloween. It is made in a dedicated homebrew cartridge, using all new parts, and built from the ground up. Two parts have been released so far, in 2014 and 2019. Freebie-GBs is the public demo version accompanying the cartridge release.

This second installment Heebie-GBs after the 2014 edition was set to release in 2018, but the cartridge release was delayed for one year because of a software bug that caused music slowdown. The bug was eventually solved and the ROM was released as Heebie-GBs 2019/Freebie-GBs 2019. The 2019 version is recommended over the 2018 version for a better listening experience, as they're materially identical apart from the bug.

Track list:

  1. nordloef - Scarecrow Harvest.
  2. Ramstorm - Skeletal Longevity.
  3. Immortan - Murder by Moonlight.
  4. Graz - Death Becomes.
  5. Tommy Creep - Ghost Emoji.
  6. donotrunwithpixels - Parthenogenesis.
  7. The Other Days - Super Château Ultra.
  8. Rebb - Ken Perlin's Noise.

Controls

  • Up/Down - Previous/Next track
  • Select - disable animations (originally intended to combat the slowdown bug in the 2018 version.)

Technical trivia

Use of LSDj

The Heebie-GBs series of music albums is based on Little Sound Dj and was created by redirecting reads from save RAM (where LSDj normally stores song adata) to ROM. Heebie-GBs 2019 has several technical improvements over Heebie-GBs 2014, such as showing an animated scene instead of the LSDj user interface, and having a smaller file size.

GBC palette trick

Even though Heebie-GBs 2019 does not natively support Gameboy Color, it's using a little trick to select a color palette. The GBC boot ROM allows monochrome games to be colorized for backward compatibility. By forcing a hash collision in the ROM header, the boot ROM loads palette entry 6, which contains red and orange tones and is normally intended for Donkey Kong.

Easter eggs

The cartridge version contains various easter eggs that are not present in the Freebie-GBs version of the ROM. One easter egg can be triggered by entering the Konami code on the copyright screen. Another easter egg can be triggered by using the cartridge on certain Gameboy clones, such as the Game Fighter.
