Knight Owls is a new roguelike strategy game for the Game Boy Advance.

The game was presented in the GBA Jam 2021.

User guide

"The sea devours the unwary. Summoning is an imprecise magic, but it is powerful enough to keep you safe. Go forth, and seek glory. Seek a new home!"

Gather owls and upgrades while managing your health and money. Voyage through three enemy-filled zones, and defeat the final boss to win.

But beware: Summoning magic is risky, and if you lose all your HP, you will have to start the game over from the beginning.

Compatibility

Can be played on browser, emulator, or run it on an actual Game Boy Advance using a flash cartridge.

Changelog

Alpha 1.3

  • Mage now costs 2 dowllars (in both unupgraded and upgraded form)
  • Unupgraded mystic gives an additional dowllar. (Upgraded mystic remains the same)
  • Unupgraded alchemist now gives 5 dowllars, and upgraded alchemist gives 10.
  • Energy knight costs 13 dowllars. Unupgraded has 30 attack, and upgraded has 42 attack.

Alpha 1.2

  • Lowered audio volume and adjusted its mixrate.
  • Fixed a typo.
  • When you lose, the game boots you back to the main menu no matter what your choice is (hopefully this will help communicate that the player has lost, and encourage them to read the instructions).

Alpha 1.1

  • Improved audio quality.
  • Slightly nerfed merchant, merchant banner, alchemist, alchemist banner.
  • Nerfed courage banner; it now gives you -2 hp. Mwahahaha.
  • Buffed mystic banner, to +5 money -2 attack.
  • Nerfed goblin to d8 (and fixed goblin description).
  • New enemies: Lilydadjoke, bones mcjones, lily and the goblins.
  • Now can view spellbook from banner selection screen.
  • Put miasma before shipwreck at the end of zones; functionally the same, but should be more intuitive.
  • Made the shop a little more consistent; from now on, there will always be 2 attacking uncommon owls, and 2 money-generating uncommon owls. (the odds of any given uncommon owl appearing is still 67%).
  • The game now checks to make sure you want to fight before summoning.
  • Final boss power is displayed on entering new zone.
  • Tweaked background art.
  • Added missing licenses to source code.
  • Fixed ui bug with two banner options.
  • Tweaked main menu text.
  • Other stuff that I'm forgetting right now.
