Taisei Project (泰西プロジェクト) is an open source fan-game set in the world of Tōhō Project. It is a top-down vertical-scrolling curtain fire shooting game (STG), also known as a "bullet hell" or "danmaku." STGs are fast-paced games focused around pattern recognition and mastery through practice.
Tōhō Project is an indie game series known for its ensemble cast of characters and memorable soundtracks. It is produced by a single artist known as ZUN, and has a permissive license which allows for indie derivative works such as Taisei Project to legally exist.
Taisei is not a "clone" of Tōhō, and tells an original story with its own music, art, gameplay mechanics, and codebase. While some familiarity with Tōhō is helpful, the gameplay can be enjoyed on its own without prior knowledge of the series. Its development began in 2011 by Laochailan, under the tentative title "OpenTH". Akaricchi, another programmer, became involved with the project starting in 2012, and the game saw its full first release later that year.
Taisei Project is officially supported on Windows, Linux, macOS, and through WebGL-enabled browsers such as Firefox and Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, etc). It can also be compiled for a number of other operating systems.
Note: The Nintendo Switch port is considered as an experimental build, use at your own risk.
Installation
Download the latest release, and extract the archive in the /switch/ folder on your SD Card.
Then, run the game from the hbmenu using hbl.
Note: This will crash if executed from an applet such as the Photo/Library applet, be sure to launch it from hbmenu on top of the game of your choice, which can be done by holding R over any installed title on latest Atmosphère, with default settings.
User guide
Taisei is a shoot-em-up game. Lots of bullets cover the screen and if you are hit by one, you die. To make things easier, your hitbox is very small–much smaller than your character.
If you get hit you lose a life; if you are out of lives, it’s Game Over, but you get a few Continues to keep playing (without scores).
See here for gameplay instructions. For the story, read this (Spoiler warning).
