After a long wait of 22 years, BillardGL is finally making its way to the Wii.
For those who don't know, BillardGL is a cool open-source 3D game that was quite popular in the early 2000s (launched in 2002, to be exact). It was developed using C++ and OpenGL 1.1. However, the Wii doesn't support OpenGL 1.1. But then came along opengx, a library created by a smart developer that made the GX API compatible with the OpenGL API. Even though the project was discontinued in 2009, the creator left behind comprehensive documentation on the project's design.
Fast forward to now, the opengx project has been brought back to life and has been upgraded to support more features of OpenGL 1.1. We're still a ways off from complete compatibility, but it's pretty cool to see a complex game like BillardGL being adapted for the Wii with minimal changes to the original code.
