Sonic Nexus is a fangame developed by Nexus Team, led by Slingerland, and powered by the Retro Sonic engine, which was created by The Taxman, who joined the project in 2008. Development of the game commenced in the summer of 2006, and it had three demo releases - two at the Sonic Amateur Games Expo and one in the summer of 2008. The game has been praised by critics, with visitors at SAGE and various blogs commenting that it is the "perfect embodiment of the classic Sonic style." The character roster consists of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.
In 2011, The Taxman announced that Retro Sonic XG merged with Sonic Nexus in early 2010, creating the newly merged game titled Retro Sonic Nexus. Most of Nexus' levels were integrated into the game and updated with the XG art style.
