Mega Man Star Force DX is a mod for Mega Man Star Force 1 that completely modernizes the game. It includes many new features, changes and tweaks throughout the entire game that bring the game up to speed with MMSF2 and MMSF3. This mod aims to create more gameplay depth and replayability, unify all three versions of the game, reduce the reliance on multiplayer, and much more.

Please note that Mega Man Star Force DX requires an original copy of Mega Man Star Force: Pegasus (US version) to play. It will not work on any other version.

Features

  • The font has been changed to that of MMSF2/MMSF3, with all text in the game updated to make use of it.
  • Star Cards have been added - these replicate the effects of the Japan-exclusive Wave Scanner peripheral.
  • All touch screen inputs and minigames can now be done with just the buttons.
  • A new difficulty setting, Legend Mode, has been added.
  • There are now two save slots, and saving speed has been increased.
  • The Lunar Knights crossover scenario, Brother Band and Battle Cards have been restored from the Japanese versions. Lunar Knights Brother * Bands can be obtained in single player.
  • You can now obtain Power Up data, which was originally obtained from the Japan-exclusive Wave Scanner peripheral.
  • All three Star Force transformations can be obtained in a single game, and have received unique new abilities to set them apart from each other.
  • All version-exclusive Satellite admin bosses can be fought.
  • All version-exclusive Giga Class cards can be obtained.
  • New side quests have been added, and you can now take on multiple at once.
  • A new EM Database feature allows you to track the battle data and location of all viruses and bosses.
  • The event-exclusive Andromeda card and Legendary Master Shin Brother Band can now be obtained in the game.
  • And much more. For the full list of changes, see All Changes.txt (contains spoilers).
  • For all Legend Mode enemy changes, see Legend Mode enemies.txt (contains spoilers).

Installation

Mega Man Star Force DX must be applied to the US version of Mega Man Star Force: Pegasus. Only this specific version of the game can be used.

In order to patch your game, you will first need to dump your copy of the game to obtain the ROM file. Once you have dumped the ROM file for the game, you can apply the patch.

Here are some easy options that allow you to dump your MMSF1 cartridge:

  • If you have a modded 3DS, you can use the homebrew applications GodMode9 or Wood Dumper for 3DS.
  • If you have a modded DSi, you can use the homebrew applications GodMode9i or Wood Dumper for DSi.
  • If you have an original DS/DS Lite, as well as a GBA flash cart, you can use the homebrew application NDS Backup Tool Slot2. Note that this is only compatible with specific GBA flash carts.
  • If you have any model of Nintendo DS and an NDS flash cart, you can use the homebrew application NDS Backup Tool Wifi. Note that this requires you to set up an unprotected Wi-Fi hotspot and host an FTP server. Be sure to disable the hotspot once you're done with it.

This is a BPS type patch. These are some tools you can use to apply it:

Note: If you're upgrading from a previous version, you need to apply the patch again to an unmodified ROM).

Compatibility with Mega Man Star Force

It is possible to create Brother Bands between Mega Man Star Force DX and the unpatched US version of Mega Man Star Force. This can be done via local wireless and Nintendo WiFi. See readme for more details.

In Mega Man Star Force DX, some new Battle Cards have been added: QuickGauge and SlowGauge.

These will show up in the unpatched version as glitched cards. Do not trade these new cards to the unpatched version of the game, as it may cause adverse side effects. Note that they will also appear in Brother Force card roulettes. However, in this case they will simply poof when used and should not have any bad effects.

The Lunar Knights Battle Cards can be traded to and work fine in the unpatched version of the game. However, they won't have names or descriptions. Also, if you trade Star Cards to the unpatched version, they will appear as blue Standard Cards. These behave like normal Standard Cards and can be safely traded back to MMSF DX; if you do, they turn back into Star Cards.

Notes

Please note emulator save states can only be used on that specific version. If you update to a new version and load a save state from a different version, things will break. Instead, you should save the game from the in-game menu, and load that save file on the new version by starting the game normally.

Warning - Several Action Replay cheats for the original MMSF1 have problems that can mess with your game when you use them on MMSF DX. In some cases, everything may appear normal at first, but unexpected glitches may occur. It is strongly discouraged to use Action Replay cheat codes in MMSF DX; especially cheats that grant items or Battle Cards, as those can corrupt your progress.

FAQ

Q. Can I import an existing Mega Man Star Force save file?

No. Mega Man Star Force (unpatched) and Mega Man Star Force DX save files are completely incompatible due to various technical reasons.

Q. Can I restore a Mega Man Star Force DX save file to the unpatched version?

Also no.

Q. Will my save file be compatible with any future updates?

Yes, this should be the case. However, emulator save states cannot be used across versions (it will cause glitches and freezes if you do).

Also, if you had a SearchEye Sub Card active, due to technical reasons, it will be deactivated until the next battle when updating to a new version.

Q. Can I play online?

Like in the original game, you can form Brother Bands online, but you cannot fight Wave Battles with other players online.

This can only be done via local wireless.

Q. How can I obtain V3 Lunar Knights cards?

Just like in the Japanese version of the game, V3 Lunar Knights cards cannot be obtained in the Card Box.

They are exclusive to the Card Roulette from a Lunar Knights Brother Card, as well as Lunar Knights Extra Folders.

Q. Can I change my Satellite?

Yes, this can be done after finishing the story.

Q. Are there new Cipher Mails in the game?

Yes, for instance: "Go beyond your limit with the Wave Scanner!"

Q. How do I create a Copy Brother?

You can do this by first obtaining the Lonely Heart Key Item, then bringing it to a certain location.

Q. Why did my card not count towards a Best Combo?

Any card which is Powered Up (has a P on it) will not register in a Best Combo.

Q: I changed my Satellite, but when I go into battle, it still uses my old one?

Power Up data is separate from your basic Satellite. To start battle as the new Star Force, update your Power Up data.

Q: Why can I not use certain Star Force transformations anymore?

To use a Star Force transformation, you must either be on that Satellite yourself or have a Brother who is on that Satellite.

Q. Will there be an MMSF2 DX or MMSF3 DX?

There are currently no plans to produce MMSF2 DX or MMSF3 DX.

Mega Man Star Force 1 - DX Mod Showcase by Prof. 9 ~ Summer Showcase 2020 (TeamBN)

Compatibility

The easiest way to play Mega Man Star Force DX is on a Nintendo DS emulator. The latest version of MelonDS is recommended. Note that MelonDS has an upscaling feature that allows you to play the game in a higher resolution.

Alternatively, you can play Mega Man Star Force DX on a real Nintendo DS, DSi or 3DS using a flash cart. Any flash cart which is capable of running backups should also be able to run Mega Man Star Force DX.

If you have a modded Nintendo DSi or Nintendo 3DS, you can also play Mega Man Star Force DX using nds-bootstrap.

Known issues

Ver. 1.2.1 - On MelonDS 0.9.3, it is recommended to turn off Literal optimizations in CPU emulation settings, as this may cause issues when renaming Folders.

Changelog

V1.2.1 2021/12/18

  • Fixed a glitch introduced in Ver. 1.2.0 where after using Fire Leo's Blaze Charge ability, your Buster Attack and Rapid stats would be stuck at LV. 0 for the rest of the battle.
  • If you finish renaming a Folder that is not the Folder you have equipped, it will now keep the cursor on the Folder you were renaming rather than moving it to the Folder that you have equipped.
  • On Legend Mode, if Wolf Woods is blinded or confused, he will now have fewer invulnerability frames at the end of Upper Claw.
  • Fixed a glitch in the base game where Crown Thunder's ghosts would appear in the wrong location if you used a screen-dimming card on the same frame that they're summoned.

V1.2.0 2021/12/14

  • Fire Leo Mega Man now has a new ability: Blaze Charge. If your next card is a Standard Card, the Mega Buster can charge up to 2 levels. When you fire the Lv. 2 Charged Shot, the card will be used up and its base Attack Power (not counting Power Up effects) is added to Flame Burner's Attack Power.
  • In multiplayer Wave Battles, you can now choose between 15 Turns, 10 Turns, 5 Turns or 3 Turns, just like in MMSF2/MMSF3.
  • Added a turn counter in multiplayer Wave Battles which is shown while the Custom Screen is open, similar to MMSF2/MMSF3.
  • The WolfWoods Mega Cards now have a command input. When Wolf Woods appears, quickly spin the +Control Pad in a circle. If successful, Wolf Woods will change into his berserk mode and the attack will inflict Blind.
  • Fixed a glitch where Poison Pharaoh would drain the HP of enemies while they were invulnerable due to Power Song. (This also caused them to become immortal if their HP rolled over to 0 while invulnerable.)
  • Fixed the subject and sender being swapped for "DX Complete!" e-mail.
  • Fixed a glitch where the wrong element icon was shown on the card image for Standard Cards in the Library.
  • Fixed a glitch in the base game where Pegasus Magic's texture doesn't animate during Pegasus Magic GX and Pegasus Freeze attacks.
  • Fixed a minor issue where in a few conversations, Geo's mugshot would alternate between Visualizer on and off if you started the conversation with the Visualizer on.
  • Fixed a glitch where on Legend Mode, Counter Hits would not bypass Crown Thunder's No Paralyze ability if the card used has a Lv. 2 or higher paralysis effect.
  • Fixed a glitch where on Legend Mode, Counter Hits would not cause Cancer Bubble to become paralyzed if the card used has a bubble effect.
  • Fixed Color Change and Humor Buster changes not being applied in multiplayer battles if you went straight into the Connect menu without closing the Transer.
  • Renamed the "Activate" menu option when selecting a Star Card in battle to "Star Power".
  • Copy Brothers no longer copy your SP Boss Records. (When you upgrade to this version, any SP Boss Records for existing Copy Brothers are automatically deleted.)
  • When you try to use a Lunar Knights Sub Card from the Item menu, it will now show an additional message telling you you can mail it to a Lunar Knights Brother.
  • Once you've obtained Power Up Data, it will now also appear in the Item menu with a message telling you to go to the third page of the Mega Screen.
  • When choosing a multiplayer battle mode, it will now skip the Start/Cancel option automatically, just like in MMSF2/MMSF3.
  • When choosing a multiplayer battle mode, if you press B on the "Waiting for response" message while the other player is still selecting Start/Cancel, it now shows the "Cancelled!" message on both players' ends rather than only for the other player.

V1.1.5 2021/07/04

  • On Legend Mode, fixed Andromeda's Meteors sometimes not being Fire Elemental when you're in Green Dragon form.
  • Fixed a developer cheat accidentally being left on in Ver. 1.1.4 which put the bonus boss in a non-attacking state.
  • Fixed TraderMan's sprite in Scrapyard 1 being cut off at the top.

V1.1.4 2021/07/03

  • On Legend Mode, changed Gemini Heal from 50% HP recovery to 25% HP recovery.
  • On Legend Mode, slightly decreased the rate at which Andromeda attacks and reduced the status effect duration for Paralysis and Gravity somewhat.
  • On Legend Mode, when you destroy Dragon Sky's Leaf Tornado with a screen-dimming attack, the tornado now fades away during the screen dim.
  • On Legend Mode, adjusted Gemini Spark's timings a little bit.
  • On Legend Mode, fixed Dragon Sky's Leaf Tornado breaking through shields, which was unintended.
  • Fixed an oversight where if you swap a Star Card in the Card Box with a Mega Card in the Folder, it could bypass the 5 Star Card limit.
  • Fixed a glitch in the Pegasus Magic battles on Legend Mode where each time he used Ice Edge, his range of movement was restricted by 1 panel.
  • Fixed a glitch where summoned viruses would appear in the wrong position if a screen-dimming card was used at the exact moment the virus appears.
  • Fixed a glitch where Green Dragon's Shield Counter invulnerability timer would continue to count down during screen-dimming attacks.
  • Fixed a glitch where if you collided with an attack during Green Dragon's Shield Counter invulnerability while you had Counter frames active, it would erroneously be treated as a Counter Hit for the opponent (Enemy Counter).
  • Fixed a glitch where, after beating Andromeda Infinity for the first time, using a Card Trader in that same play session would freeze the game.
  • Fixed a glitch in the base game where if you try to summon a JunkCube in the middle column and the panel is occupied, it would always only try to summon it on the left rather than trying left and right in a random order.
  • Adjusted the script for Kelvin's Transer so you can no longer pick it up multiple times when mashing the A Button.
  • Minor script fixes.

  • Fixed a glitch in the base game where you could pick up multiples of the snakes from Prof. Snake's Transer quest when mashing the A Button. (When you upgrade to this version, the extra snakes will be removed from Key Items.)
  • Fixed Grabity family viruses taking too much damage from JunkCube cards.

V1.1.2 2021/06/18

  • Reduced the required Attack Power for the Best Combo Jammer.
  • When you get Countered by an enemy, it will now show an ENEMY COUNTER! pop-up message at the top of the screen.
  • Adjusted the Quiz King's quiz to account for Legend Mode.
  • Added sound effects to more quizzes and disabled the B Button on quiz menus.
  • During the PitcherMan cutscene in Chapter 3, Geo now has his Visualizer on and PitcherMan's face portrait is now shown in the text box (for consistency).
  • You can now touch the "EQUIP" button in the Transer screen with the stylus to switch to that page.
  • When you delete a Study Wave in School Comps, the step counter is now reset to what it was when you stepped on the arrow panel, similar to other Comp gimmicks that temporarily disable encounters.

  • Fixed the quest icon showing up on Teresa Tudor's Transer one chapter before you can accept the quest.
