ds-trivia is a homebrew trivia game for Nintendo DS. It reads its questions from a file called "questions" that contains 10 000 questions.

The game is meant to be a lot like IRC Trivia and the questions file used was intended for Triviabots.

Installation

DLDI-patch the nds file if necessary (some homebrew devices do it for you.)

Copy nds file to your memory card (or whatever) and copy the questions file to the root of your card.

User guide

How to play

First choose how many questions you want. Then the game will randomly select that number of questions from the questions file and display them to you one at a time. You get a hint which is the answer but with all the letters and numbers replaced with dots.

Every time you get the question wrong it reveals some of the dots as letters. And each time it reveals more letters, you get 20 less points if you get the question right. (So, if you get it right first try you get 100 points, if you get it wrong and get a hint, then get it right on your second try, you get 80 points.

Each hint reveals 20% more letters, and reduces how much the question is worth by 20.

If you want to skip a question and get 0 points for it, type in "/skip", or if you're lazy, "/s". You can also quit the game and get 0 points for the rest of the questions if you type in "/quit" or "/q". Then you will be able to go back to where you choose the number of questions and your score will be reset.

Making questions

The questions file has a question on each line. There are three parts, separated by pipe symbols |. First is the category, which is optional, then the answer, then the question.

The answer is case-insensitive and you can use just about any punctuation/symbol you want except the backslash, pipe, tilde, and backquote symbols. (Because they didn't fit into the keyboard.) Just remember that all the punctuation will be revealed in the first hint. Only letters and numbers are hidden.

Also, dots can be used in the answer and could confuse people whether that dot is a hint for a letter or an actual dot. You can decide whether you want to do that or not when making questions.

Don't make questions too long because otherwise it could take up the entire top screen and continue printing the question on the bottom screen. Also don't make extremely long answers because it would probably be annoying to type on the touchscreen keyboard.

Example:

General knowledge|A 16th-century helmet|what is a burgonet?

Would print the question "General knowledge: what is a burgonet?" and would print this hint:

Hint: . ....-....... ......
