To celebrate Super Robot Wars A Portable’s 10th anniversary, this is a full translation of the game into English. This translation was born out of friendship, respect for the original work and their authors, and love for Super Robot Wars and their related anime series.

Over the 5 years of the project, the Steel Soul team tried to build a translation that would convey the original experience - in the story, in the graphics - to English speakers. They sincerely hope that you enjoy your time with A Portable, even if it comes kicking you hard with its difficulty.

This patch is distributed in xdelta3 format. Apply it to your legal ISO backup of the Japanese original UMD.

To apply the patch you can use:

Windows user can also use the batch files provided with the patch:

  • Extract the patch's zip to a folder.
  • Get version 3.0.11 of xdelta.
  • Extract the 2 exes from there and add them to the directory of the patch.
  • Have your ISO in the same directory as the patch.
  • Make sure your ISO is named SRT_AP_J.iso.
  • Now choose one of:
    • "patch_files_64bits.bat" on a Windows 64-bit machine (most recent machines are, in case you doubt).
    • "patch_files_32bits.bat" for older Windows machines.
  • Give it a good minute, it can take some time.
  • This creates SRT_AP_English.iso.

Note:

  • "Bad vshader was cached" error on PPSSPP: Don't use Vulkan shaders for this game, try DX11 instead.
  • Do not use UMDGen's dummy feature. dummy.bin now contains useful stuff.

User guide

About the game

Super Robot Taisen A Portable is a turn-based strategy game (released only in Japan) boasting well-known anime mecha series:

  • Getter Robo, G’s Benkei, Shin Getter Robo.
  • Gundams-a-plenty! MS Gundam, Char’s Counter attack, The 08th MS Team, 0083: Stardust Memory, Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, Mobile Fighter G Gundam.
  • Metal Armor Dragonar.
  • Martian Successor Nadesico.
  • Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, UFO Robo Grendizer.
  • Combattler V, Voltes V, Tosho Daimos.
  • Daitarn 3, Zambot 3.
  • and some of the Banpresto Original characters from Original Generation (no Excellen, though, but enough beauties, don’t worry).

The story is independent from other entries, so the game can be played regardless of whether you have played Original Generation for instance. You will however play as either Axel or Lamia, whose stories are more fleshed out here than in the GBA entries. As is the tradition in Super Robot Wars, the story branches on some occasions to invite you to multiple playthroughs.

The game features a special “evasion erosion” mechanism, and enemies with a lot of evasion. This has made fans consider this game as one of the harder entries in the Super Robot Wars series.

Other game features include (skippable) battle animations with voices, in-battle and in-dialog save options, multiple spirits casting in a single action, multiple pilots for some of the bigger mechs.

This is actually a PlayStation Portable remake of the Game Boy Advance game with the same title (without “Portable”). Some of the features mentioned above were not present on its GBA counterpart, and the graphics are obviously higher res’ and re-done.

Incompatibilities with the JP version

  • Using a Japanese "intermission" save will actually prevent some texts from being translated (as they come from the save itself). "Continue" (suspend) saves from the Japanese games will probably have undesired side-effects.
  • Savestates from the Japanese game won't work properly (as the memory layout is different).
  • Reading a save with Japanese icon will prevent the game from using the translated version of the icon. It is strongly recommend removing your Japanese SRW AP saves from the memory card before playing.
  • Hacks to give yourself more money, skills and others may or may not work.
  • The save editor still works, although it is unable to render text properly or let you rename your hero & robot in a way the English game likes.

Known limitations

  • Renaming heroes and their robots is more restricted than it would be in modern entries in the SRW series, and you can "get a bad display of text" if you enter too long a name. The game will assume the name is less than 80 pixels, and you are limited in number of characters, but doesn't check the pixels at the time you rename heroes/robots, so it's up to you to be reasonable.
  • The "Gundam Deathscythe Hell" has the hell of a long name. We couldn't get ourselves to use an abbreviation for it, so it does "overflow" out of the small status box at the bottom of the screen when the cursor hovers over it.
  • "Hyper Mega Particle Cannon" just doesn't fit either. We know abbreviated versions are imperfect, but that's just the way it is.
  • Puru 2 decided she'd appear before Puru in the pilots pedia. That's just it. We couldn't find how to change that, though that shouldn't prevent anyone from enjoying the game.
  • A unit that is underground will be offered to surface with a menu item that reads "Land" (like it would for a flying unit). While this isn't elegant, there are few units that go underground and we wanted to keep a verb here (rather than going with "on surface" or things like this). It's still fairly understandable.
  • The combo attack "Darkness God Finger" has Domon's line incorrect (as it is the same line in Japanese for another attack). It still sounds cool, though.
  • This translation has been tested on PSP "fat" with 6.60 ME-1.8, PSP-2000 with 6.60 PRO-B10, PSP 3000, and the PPSSPP emulator. Other setups may or may not work.

Limitations from the original game

  • Like the original game, the Counter skill item doesn't really grant the pilot who uses it the Counter skill (although the Pilot will list it in his/her skills).
  • The battle animation for the Stoner Sunshine has hin Getter Robo split into Getter Robo machines instead of their newer counterpart.
  • The battle animation for the Dendronium's large beam saber uses red, instead of pink.
  • The battle animation for one of Light's attacks cuts the audio for his attack a bit short.
