I have been working on a homebrew project that is a remake of a 1998 promotional game created to encourage recycling batteries in the Netherlands. The original game was a fun and non-violent puzzle platformer that used the Jazz Jackrabbit game engine. The campaign and game were released on CD-ROM and could be obtained by recycling 15 batteries.

The game was later released as freeware by the publisher, but has since been removed. I have obtained permission to release the game under a Creative Commons license, but am still determining which specific version. I have also created a "game engine" that runs on Linux, Wii, Gamecube, Batterycheck 3DS and will soon be available on PSP.

The Wii Version is still NOT a complete game!

GameCube Version

I have finally had the opportunity to test the GameCube version of my homebrew project, a remake of a 1998 promotional game to stimulate recycling batteries in the Netherlands. The game is a fun and non-violent puzzle platformer that uses the Jazz Jackrabbit game engine.

Since there is no homebrew channel for the GameCube, I have included the DOL file in the attached ZIP file. The instructions for launching the game are similar to the Wii version and it will create the directory "/apps/batterycheck" and install the game files there from "batterycheck.zip" and put "battery-gb-preview-3.dol". To launch the game, use your launcher to navigate to the /apps/batterycheck directory and you should see the "preview-3.dol" file, despite the typo in the name.

Changelog

Preview v0.3.4

  • One way platforms are working perfectly!
  • Batteries can be collected without counting them multiple times!
  • Except super batteries! Sometimes they don't get counted!!
  • There was a surprise added to v0.3.4 on the PS2....and I am happy to say it does work on the Wii as well!

Preview v0.3
The controls have not changed much since last time but there are quite a few improvements:

  • Multiple sound effects are working now!!
  • Improved wall detection so you can't easily walk through them anymore
  • Added collection of Batteries, Extra Lifes and Super Batteries (which has a bug that does not remove the object properly sometimes)
  • Energy bar is working and slowly runs out
  • Use the recharge gate to keep your battery charged (has animation and sound effects!!)
  • Jumping and landing sound effects
  • You can now stand on interactive elements like: Floats, belts, elevators and laser-beam-one-way-platforms
