Mother: The Video Game was developed in Spring 2019 as the final project for a Media Device Architecture class at Georgia Tech.

It is a pixel platformer whose theme came from the universe of Mother, an original science fiction by Joey Bishop deeply rooted in 80s nostalgia.

The project was built in C and involved state machines, complex gravity, and wall climbing, among other game mechanics.

User guide

The game features three separate levels - focused on three different characters - that have their own gameplay mechanics and goals.

  • Hacking - Navigate through a difficult platformer level and defeat the boss at the end.
  • Bug Moon - Control a spaceship, fight off enemy ships and survive an asteroid belt to win.
  • Portelyth - Navigate a dangerous cave and play 5 minigames to unlock a door and escape.

Controls

Up/Down - Move between the different levels

Start - Navigate through most menus

Select - Navigate from Pause menu to Start menu

Hacking:

Left/Right - Move the character

Up - Jump

A - Dash

B - Shoot.

Bug Moon:

Up/Down - Move the spaceship

A - Shoot

Portelyth:

Left/Right - Move the character

Up/Down - Climb

A - Jump

B - Climb
