This is an experiment project to explore ways to enhance color capabilities by manipulating images for the Game Boy screen. It started with an image of a cat, which was then resized to fit the screen's aspect ratio, reduced to 4-bit color and converted to Gameboy tile format.

To address noise diffusion issues, a pixel shifting technique was introduced. This method involved shifting the image by a single pixel during each frame, taking advantage of the DMG LCD's delayed response to generate a horizontal blur effect with interpolated shades.

The project further explored creating smooth greyscale gradients optimized for the DMG LCD. By alternating shades and frames, it achieved up to 13 distinct shades of green, improving the visual quality within the hardware's constraints.

This is an experiment project to explore ways to enhance color capabilities by manipulating images for the Game Boy screen.

Developed by nitro2k01 in 2013 for his Game Boy project week #1.

Installation

For emulator use, choose BGB and enable frame mixing in graphics preferences.

On hardware, ROMs work best on DMG models and may be less compatible with GBC.
