Solitaire Mahjongg for the PSP is a Kyodai/Shanghai-like board game.

It is a game of strategy, memory and luck. It uses 144 Mahjongg tiles, arranged in a pile called "The Dragon". Match the titles in pairs to clear the board and win the game.

The game features both single player and two player hotseat modes.

Features

  • Single player solitaire
  • Two player hotseat challenge
  • Classic Dragon (or Turtle, as some call it) board layout
  • Classic Mah-Jongg tileset
  • Small footprint. Only takes about 1.5 MB on your memory stick
  • Freeware. This game will cost you zip, nada, nothing.

User guide

Objectives

The goal of Solitaire Mahjongg is to clear the board by removing all the tiles from the layout. The tiles must be removed in pairs. A pair consists of two tiles which both are "free" and identical (or of the same type).

A tile is considered "free" when:

  • No other tile is lying above or is partially covering it, and
  • No other tile is lying to the left or to the right of it. (In other words, it can "slide" in one or both of these directions.)

Two tiles are identical if they look exactly the same. An exception to this rule are the Flowers and Seasons tiles. They are non-identical matching tiles and belong to the same type. All the Flowers tiles match one another and all the Season tiles match one another.

A Mah-Jongg set consists of 144 tiles. These are split in seven groups, called sets. The three first sets are numeric and they are called suits. The winds and the dragons tiles are called honor tiles.

solitairemahjsjurk8.png DotsBams (1-9) - There are four tiles of each bam (36 total).

solitairemahjsjurk9.png DotsWinds (N, E, S, W) - There are four tiles of each wind (16 total).

solitairemahjsjurk10.png DotsDragons (Red, White, Green) - There are four tiles of each dragon (12 total).

solitairemahjsjurk11.png DotsFlowers (Orc, Plum, Mum, Bam) - There are one of each flower (4 total). Any flower match any other flower.

solitairemahjsjurk12.png DotsSeasons (Spr, Sum, Aut, Win) - There are one of each season (4 total). Any season match any other season.

Strategy

  • Remember that there are four of each tile. When removing a pair, remember that an identical pair exists in the layout. Is it trapped by your removal of the first pair?
  • Concentrate your efforts on long rows and tall stacks.
  • Plan ahead as many moves as you can.
  • If all four of a tile are available, remove them all to unclutter the field.
  • Identify as many matching pairs as possible. Check for tiles that need to be unblocked.
  • Beware of triples (three matching free tiles); choose carefully which pair you remove. Leave the one that's blocking the least important tiles.
  • Concentrate on removing pairs that will unblock the most tiles.
  • Pause the game and select "Show available moves" if you are stuck.

Two player challenge

Although this game is called "Solitaire" it is indeed possible to play a fun two player hotseat challenge.

Each player takes turns, trying to find a matching pair (within the time limit selected before the start of the game). When the time is up, play passes to the other player (with a one second "grace" period to let players hand over the PSP without losing any time).

When the board is cleared, or no matching tiles have been found four passes in a row, the game is over.

The winner is the player with most matches.
