Newer DS is a mod of New Super Mario Bros. that sets Mario out on an all-new adventure. It is a sequel to Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii, using assets and ideas from it, while keeping it somewhat fresh and taking advantage of mechanics in New Super Mario Bros. DS. Originally meant to just be a level and tileset hack, the game is now much more customized.
Features
- 80 all-new levels on 8 world maps.
- Original and ported graphics and sounds.
- The return of a classic power-up.
- New and updated game mechanics.
- A brand-new soundtrack featuring old and new hits.
Installation
Requirements:
- An untrimmed New Super Mario Bros. ROM (Japan, US, EUR, KOR, or CHN regions).
- A computer running Windows XP or newer, macOS Sierra or newer, Linux, or a way to apply xdelta patches.
- A way to play the ROM: DS flashcarts, emulators, etc (this game is best played on a real console).
To apply the patch:
- Extract the contents of the downloaded zip somewhere on your computer and run the patcher program designated for your operating system.
- For Linux and macOS users. You will first need to install the latest Python 3 release for your system, which will allow you to run the .py script.
- After installing Python, run the following commands in a terminal window to install other libraries (PyQt5 is required, xdelta3 is optional):
python3 -m pip install PyQt5
python3 -m pip install xdelta3
- After this, you will be able to launch the patch_wizard.py script.
- (If double-clicking the file doesn't work, run
python3 patch_wizard.py
in a terminal window after navigating to patch_wizard.py's directory.)
- Follow the instructions on-screen, and you should end up with a patched NDS file.
If you're unable to run the program:
- Look around for a way to apply xdelta patches to files on your operating system, such as xdelta UI, Delta Patcher and MultiPatch.
- Then get an md5 hash of your ROM and apply the xdelta that has a matching filename.

FAQ
Q. The game crashes at any moment.
If you're playing the game on any of the mentioned compatible flashcarts, try to back up and format your SD card using the SD Association's card formatter.
Q. The game is slow!
Generally, this means your computer is not powerful enough to run DS emulators. Nevertheless, below follows a list of fixes.
- For DeSmuMe, try to enable frameskipping from Config > Frame Skip and enable dynamic recompilation from Config > Emulation settings.
- For DeSmuMe on Linux, you have to run the emulator with the
--cpu-mode=1
parameter from the terminal. - If running on a Windows laptop, try to go into Maximum Performance mode, available in the battery settings. Be sure to have the computer plugged in, as well; otherwise, the CPU is throttled to conserve power.
- On DSTWO, try to enable the clean mode. You will need a regular, non-SDHC SD card for this, however, as the SDHC support for clean mode is shoddy.
Q. The patcher says my ROM is unsupported!
Your ROM might be not a clean New Super Mario Bros. ROM, or you might have not unpacked all the xdelta patches fom the .zip properly.
Please note that since 1.05, it no longer supports trimmed ROMs, and ROMs from regions other than Japan, Europe, America, Korea and China have never been supported.

Compatibility
Tested Emulators:
DeSmuMe 0.9.11 (requires a hefty computer to run smoothly, make sure dynamic recompilation is checked in emu settings)
MelonDS 0.9.1 (works with sound problems and slight slowdown at times)
Medusa (worked on the first alpha release; does not anymore)
DraStic for Android (works perfectly)
OpenEmu for macOS (works perfectly)
No$GBA 2.7+ (works but many 3D graphical elements don't work, not recommended)
Wii U Virtual Console - HachiHachi (you may want to adjust the emulator's brightness in configuration_cafe.json file)
Flashcarts:
Acekard 2.1/Acekard 2.1i (works perfectly on latest AKAIO)
Supercard DSTWO (works mostly fine in patch mode, slight graphical glitches or slowdown might occur, same as the original game)
R4 (works perfectly with the latest Wood firmware)
Other flashcarts (will probably work as well, as long as they support New Super Mario Bros)
Other:
TWLoader/SRLoader/TWiLightMenu++ with nds-bootstrap seems to work fine with Mario Kart DS set as donor ROM; tested on TWiLightMenu++ v20.2.1 with nds-bootstrap v0.40.2. nds-bootstrap updates sometimes break the game, so if you experience problems on more recent releases, try downgrading to that version. Also ensure that the DMA Card Read setting is set to Off.
